It’s faster by bullet train when compared to flying to Shanghai or Hong Kong when you take into account the time it takes to get to the airport, the check in time, the flight itself plus the getting from the airport at the destination back into the city. The train will go from city centre to city centre, plenty of walking about on the train, it’s way easier and faster.

The seating options are:

  • Second class (standard) – generally a 3 x 2 configuration, buffet car.
  • First class – 2 x 2 configuration, bigger seat, buffet car. Worth the upgrade from second class.
  • Business class – 2 x 1 configuration, top of the range! Converts to a lie flat bed at the touch of a button. Meals served at seat and included in the price. Worth it if you can afford it.

Business Class

Yes, you have read correctly; business class seats are top of the range as opposed to first class. They are more expensive of course but on a journey of 9 hrs to Hong Kong for example, it will pay dividends in terms of arriving well rested. The large airline style seats convert to a flat bed at the touch of a button. There is also a pre-departure lounge at the station.

The map on the right shows the route down to Hong Kong and you can also see Shanghai on the coast.

Beijing – Shanghai. There are regular departures. A sensible mid morning departure will have you in Shanghai early afternoon. Journey time just under 5 hrs.

Beijing – Hong Kong. Daily 1000 hrs departures will get you into Kowloon by 1900hrs. Journey time just under 9 hrs.

What About The Flight Back To London?

Having flown into Beijing and used the train to Shanghai or Hong Kong (or further afield), you would then fly back to London from where you are.

In most cases, the airfare from London – Beijing – London is the same or extremely similar to that of London – Beijing and then Shanghai or Hong Kong – London. We will inform you of any changes to costs BEFORE we book your flights. We do not charge admin fees for returning from a different destination.
