Fantastic Arctic Charity Challenge; a full on 7 day expedition across superb cross country skiing terrain. No previous skiing or winter camping experience required.

A superb arctic challenge across the Finnmark Plateau on crisp white ‘dry’ snow. Staying in a mix of cabins and tents, the sense of freedom and open space is immense; no roads, no people, no fixed times to adhere to. The expedition is completely self contained, save for a friendly Husky or two, there to help pull the supplies (this is not a dog sled expedition!). You are highly likely to come across herds of reindeer and their nomadic herders.

  • Most specialist equipment included (skis, boots, poles, tents, pulks, cooking equipment, etc…)
  • Hire of expensive kit available (ie, arctic sleeping -20 deg C, roll mat)
  • Northern Lights (weather permitting)

An easy paced and stress free expedition with excellent Guides who will teach you everything.

This expedition is for any aspiring adventurer, looking to try the Arctic environment and yet not extreme. The ski distances are manageable and enjoyable even for non skiers. You will still need to be fit to cope with the rigours of such an environment but no previous experience of the Arctic is required.

* The interim payment is made by the charity and is reliant on the fundraiser having sufficient funds in their fundraising account. The target dates for this (and the amounts required) will be shown on the Pledge form.

Fundraising Options Explained

Under this option, you pay the entire cost of your trip yourself, directly to us.
You then raise as much sponsorship as you can for your chosen charity. There is no pressure of a time or financial target.
The balance payment for your trip is due 60 days prior to your departure.

You pay us the deposit PLUS a 2nd personal contribution (some months later), which reduces the fundraising target.
You then commit to raising a minimum amount of sponsorship for your chosen charity. From that the remaining balance for your trip will be paid.
You will be asked to complete a Pledge Form with the charity. It sets out the target dates and any guidelines required; this is a requirement of your booking.
Your fundraising target must be met, and paid to the charity, a min of 10 weeks prior to your departure date. This enables them to pay the remaining balance for your trip with no financial risk to themselves.

You pay your deposit and then commit to raising a minimum amount of sponsorship for your chosen charity. From that sponsorship, the remaining balance for your trip will be paid.

Your chosen charity will support your fundraising throughout and all sponsorship money you raise must be paid to them upon receipt. Generally, the sponsorship target is set to ensure that a minimum of 50% of the money you raise is retained by the charity. All money raised above the target will also be retained by the charity. Your fundraising target must be met, and paid to the charity, a min of 10 weeks prior to your departure date. This enables them to pay the remaining balance for your trip with no financial risk to themselves.

Ski Training/familiarisation – Ask about our 4 hrs ski training/familiarisation in Alta on Day 1. Note, you will need to arrive in Alta 1 day early.

10 Mar 2019, Depart London, Arrive Alta
You will be met on arrival in Alta and taken to a local guesthouse/cabin where you will stay the first night. Your Guide will go through the program and the skiing route over dinner.
He will also conduct a check of your personal outdoor equipment to make sure everybody has brought everything they need and that the equipment meets the standards that the Arctic environment requires. D

11 Mar, Final Preparations, Start Expedition
After breakfast, final preparations will take place including time to make any adjustments to kit. Travel to the expedition area. It’s a nice easy introduction on Day 1 with a 4km ski to the Jotka Mountain Cabin. Based from the Cabin, in the afternoon you will be teamed up with 1 or 2 other people with whom you will work together and share a tent during the trip. You will also be shown how to put up your tent and how to use some of the equipment that you will be using on the trip. Having skiied the 4km, it’s a good time to make any additional adjustments before the journey across the Finnmark Plateau starts in earnest.
The guide will also go through safety routines, skiing routines and how to handle the dogs in the best way possible. BLD

12 Mar, Expedition
After breakfast, off we go. The Alaska Huskies will help pull some of the equipment and you will be surprised to see how much these dogs love to work. Half of the day will be skiied on tracks; the rest off track. This is the first night in tents. We will now be well on our way and the landscape will be quite flat and mostly treeless. BLD

13 Mar, Expedition
Today’s route passes some lakes and the group will spend some time fishing on the ice for Arctic Char, Brown Trout and Grayling. Camp is set up by a lake. BLD

14 Mar, Expedition
Some additional fishing in the morning perhaps before progressing further across the Plateau. BLD

15 Mar, Expedition
The first few kilometers will be in gentle uphill terrain before we reach the highest point on the trip and fabulous views. We will be skiing a few more kilometers before we make camp for the night. BLD

16 Mar, Expedition
Today, a gentle descent from the barren mountains into the forest heading for the mountain cabin. This cabin has a basic standard with no shower facilities but it is heated with a wood burner! It creates an incredible cozy atmosphere in a winter wonderland outside. BLD

17 Mar, Expedition – Last Day, ski into Husky Lodge
The final day will see us skiing around 15 kilometers, on tracks and mostly downhill all of the way into Husky Lodge. Husky Lodge is a very comfortable place, dinner served in the kitchen in the warm and cozy lodge atmosphere. A nice wood heated sauna and outdoor hot tub is ready on request for those tempted. BLD

18 Mar, Depart, Bus to Alta Airport, fly to London
Early departure for the 4hr bus journey back to Alta to catch the flight back to London.

Challenge Information

Passport – Must be valid for the duration of your trip; no further requirements.

Visa – No tourist visa required.

Flight Tickets – Most airlines work on e-tickets now (the flight reference No (we supply) and your surname). There are no paper tickets. We supply you with the flight details and how to check in on line (or at the airport) as part of the process.

Travel Insurance – Mandatory on our trips. We will ask for proof of cover. We do not sell travel insurance. Go to our Information webpage for our unbias advice and tips.

No minimum number required – this trip is guaranteed to depart.

The maximum group size is 8 pax + the Guide(s).

This trek is graded as ‘Challenging’. It entails moving on cross country touring skis, pulling a pulk (sledge) behind you weighing 25 – 30kg (using a harness around the waist). Skiing distances are between 4 – 15km daily.

The skiing is a shuffling action in order to pull the pulk along so a good degree of strength is required. This is in addition to the physical effort required to set up camp, cook and break camp the following day. This may be conducted in very cold weather. If you are struggling with the weight of the pulk, teamwork will take hold and some weight will be re-distributed to other expedition members and/ or the Huskies.

No previous cross country skiing experience is necessary, although of course it is an advantage. You will be shown how to use the skis and the terrain is relatively flat. You’re pulling everything with you, in pulks. The Husky dog(s) are there to assist but they are not there to pull you! The itinerary is flexible enough to adapt to whatever the conditions throw at you; your Guides are equipped to deal with it.

Temperatures average -7 deg C during the day, colder at night and down to -20 deg C up on the plateau. You need to be equipped and prepared for that range of temperatures. You will need mental and physical endurance to undertake this trip and we would recommend a high level of fitness.

  • B’fast is supplied in hotels, full board on trek (mainly freeze dried).
  • Breakfasts; mainly cereals.
  • Lots of hot drinks.
  • Pre-packed lunches.
  • Evening meals – meat and vegetables, fish (fresh!).

All expedition members are expected to assist with all elements of the expedition including meal preparation.


  • Guesthouse – Night 1, twin share basis, same sex.
  • On trek – tents and the odd Cabin, twin share basis, same sex. Cabins can be communal, ie no specific rooms.
  • Lodge – Final night (pictured below), twin share basis, same sex.
  • Sole occupation is only available on the 1st and final nights when in Guesthouses/Lodges. Cost £35 per night. Sole occupation on the expedition is not possible.

Our default flights are London – Alta (ALF). We use a variety of airlines using one stop (there are no direct flights to ALTA from London).

Included luggage allowance in the aircraft hold is a min of 20kg but more commonly 23 – 30kg.

London not convenient?

Other regional airport options are possible. We appreciate the potential inconvenience of London if you live far away. Whilst using regional airports may attract supplements due to higher flight costs, that cost may be offset by the cost and time of travelling to London. Please ask for advice.

No special vaccinations are required for Norway.
